"Thanks to the vision of Ironman founder John Collins, who insisted that a system be maintained to allow the "common man" a chance to compete at the Ford Ironman World Championship, 200 far-from-common age-groupers will join the rest of the 1,800 strong competitors on October 11, 2008 for the Ford Ironman World Championship.
Each year, 200 athletes are selected to participate in Kona through a lottery system. One hundred and fifty of the athletes will be selected from United States applicants and fifty athletes will be selected from other countries. The Ford Ironman World Championship is one of the most in demand athletic events in the world. Qualifying gets more difficult each year, so the lottery is another option to enter the race."
Message from Ford Ironman World Championship Event Director Diana Bertsch
Competing in The Ford Ironman World Championship is truly an experience that will provide you with a lifetime of memories. Crossing the finish line on Alii Drive is where dreams come true.
Entering and being selected in the Ford Ironman World Championship lottery wins you a slot to race against the best endurance athletes in the world. As you strive to fulfill your dream by entering Kaiakekua Bay on October 11, 2008 in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii you will have reached a physical, emotional and spiritual potential that cannot be matched. You will have found a purpose so big it will challenge every capacity to be your best.
I believe Walt Disney said it best, "All of your dreams come true if you have the courage to pursue them."
Be strong, go with your heart and believe in yourself because "Anything is Possible."
